Beware The Economic Crunch Is Eating Away Healthy Diets

Be very careful what you are cutting back on when it comes to dealing with the economic crunch that is being felt all over the world. I am specifically talking about the foods we are consuming on a daily basis. I realize that some of the best ways to save money when trying to stretch your budget way beyond it’s limits is to lower your standards for what type of foods you buy at the grocery stores. The groceries we buy are usually one of the first things to get adjusted when we start to feel those pinches on the wallet.

I recently read an article about a survey that was conducted in the UK recently. Approximately 2000 people were polled and about 33% of those people that were polled confirmed that due to their personal financial hardships that the quality of their diets had declined significantly. Most people opting to buy the cheaper processed foods in order to stretch their budgets. Now this is just a small poll in one country but I am certain that it is a good representation of the general population for many countries around the globe.

As hard as it is for so many of us to stay on a healthy diet, when it comes to eating healthy on a budget. That is another element to the challenge of staying healthy that many of us are not willing to take on. I would urge you to consider the long term end result of your choices to go with the cheaper processed foods. I guess it comes down to personal choice and what you value as the most important choices in your lifestyle. For us it does mean that we don’t eat out very often and we plan ahead for our meals. Looking for coupons and deals on foods at all the local grocery stores as well as buying things in bulk.Cooking healthy meals on a larger scale just so we will have leftovers for a couple more days than normal. Even using the crock pot a little more often which great for throwing a few things in at once and creating new meals by the way. Now if I can learn to stay this committed to my finances as well as I am to eating healthy and staying fit then I would be set! Oh well here’s to staying committed to what’s important in our lives and always evolving, cheers!

Thank you for this reminder. Our household is talking: what can we buy that’s non-organic, i.e. cheaper, and not compromise our health? What can we buy in bulk? What can we stock up on when there’s a sale price? What can we cook in large batches and then freeze in smaller batches for later? And the project: a bigger veggie garden!!
