Exercise Is An Intricate Part Of Sensible Weight Loss

This year has been rather quite when it comes to news on diets and exercise. It’s been pretty much standard stuff  through out this year of 2009 diets. So when I saw quite a fury about diets, loosing weight and the relevance of exercise on the internet back in August thanks to a Time article called “Why Exercise Won’t Make You Thinner” that was posted on their site by John Cloud. The article was pretty lengthy with a few references to the idea that exercise is not all that important or shall we say useful when it comes to the concept of loosing weight, say what? Yep that was the idea posed by Mr. Cloud and needless to say the fitness community did not take to kindly to his exercise won’t make you thinner concept. I think WTF was the general response I saw from most fitness bloggers as well as some more established media outlets posting their own response as to why the Time article was wrong, I believe the LA Times headline response to why exercise won’t make you thinner was “what were you thinking?” or something to that effect.

Honestly I think the main reason why the Time article was posted was to get all the attention that it got over the course of the next few days. Guess what it worked people are very passionate about their exercise and their beliefs about what it is good for and why they do it. I don’t really think there was anything actually wrong with the time article for what it was stating with regards to not getting thin thru exercise alone. Well duh! I think we all know that as fact by now and understand that exercise is only part of the equation when it comes to the right formula for getting thin or loosing weight.

I would hope at this point that anyone with in ear shot of a TV, radio, magazine or newspaper over the last 30 years which pretty much covers all of us ;-) Understands that the proper combination of diet and exercise is the key to not only loosing weight but getting and staying healthy as well.

It was nice to see such a strong response from the fitness community in general to the rather misleading concept behind the exercise won’t make you thinner article. I do appreciate the fact that the article was good link bait for the internet and I am sure that it generated a lot of good seo and one way links back to the Time domain but that’s a post idea for a different blogshot

One of the better descriptions I saw in response to that inflammatory article was that it was promoting the idea that society was exercising it’s way to fatness! Wow I guess Mr. Cloud struck a nerve with the fitness community. Seriously though you have a passion or even a little bit of interest in fitness you should take a quick gander at  why exercise won’t make you thinner and read it. Also in the interest of being fair and just because I thought these were some of the better responses to the Time article check out this at the LA Times and this response by one of the fitness experts  over at the Biggest Looser Weight Loss Club. Be sure to read the comments off the LA Times piece and that should give you a good idea at how much people were not happy with why exercise won’t make you thinner.

I think when I look back on the diets of 2009 and all the news that was in the headlines this year regarding weight loss and exercise that I will remember that little article that was posted over at Time. It caused quite a stir for the online fitness community for the month of August and served as a good reminder for those of us that are passionate about our exercise and know that it’s only a piece of the puzzle that is weight loss and living healthy.
